Tanunda a small rural town in Barossa Valley has plenty of tourist attractions which are quite amazing. Tourists here can check out plenty of historical sites, vineyards and wineries which are renowned globally for their high quality wines.
The journey to this beautiful rural town should start with the Barossa Wine and Visitor Center which is located at Murray Street. The center is open on all the seven days and provides information about the entire Barossa Valley region.
The center also displays the history of the local wine industry. Tourists can check out various information which dates back to the nineteenth century. Besides the above, tourists also gets to know about the importance of the wine industry and role of the fruit growers in different regions of the valley.
Another interesting spot at Tanunda is the Goat Square, which is also referred as Der Zeigenhrat. The Goat Square was established as a city center by Charles Flaxman. The center was a common meeting place and was also used for trading goods through bartering.
Tanunda also has number of Churches which were built by the Prussians who fled from Europe because of lack of religious freedom. On their arrival in Tanunda they constructed several Churches for the local population.
One such Church built in the year 1849 was the Tabor Lutheran Church which is situated at Murray Street. The Church is known for its Orb which is located on the top of a 26 meter spire. Inside the orb tourists can check out records dating back to the 1850’s which would be not very far from your Tanunda Accommodation.
Another or the religious Tanunda attractions is the Langmeil Lutheran Church which is known for its unique entrance. The Church is also the resting place of Pastor Augustus Kavel, who was the main person behind the immigration of Prussians from Europe to South Australia in the 1830’s.
Another Lutheran Church at Tanunda is the St. John’s Lutheran Church which was built in the year 1868. St. John Church is also located at Murray Street and is known for its five statures which are made out of wood. All these wood statues are colored with white paint in order to make them look like marble statues. The five statues built at the Church represent Lord Christ, Jeremiah, Moses, St. Paul and St. Peter.
Tourists can also check out a printing office which was built in the year 1855. The office is known as the Auricht’s Printing Office and has been Tanunda’s main printing center for a period of more than 130 years.
The Post Office of Tanunda is another example of how people loved their community and always tried to help each other during difficult times. The land on which the post office was built was purchased by the people of the town, which was then given to the government for constructing a post office. The building came into existence in the year 1866 and is now used as a museum storing historical records and other information of that period.
Tourists can also check out the Chateau Tanunda winery which was built in the year 1889. The Chateau was renowned for its high quality wines which were produced there. The chateau is located near to the Tanunda railway station and is now used as a function center for showcasing different brands of wine which are produced in the Barossa valley region.
Tanunda also has several workshops which produce wine casks and kegs. The most amazing thing about these workshops is that they are still using the ancient methodology for manufacturing casks and kegs. Tourists who are interested to experience this ancient wine cask manufacturing procedure can visit any workshop which is open to general public.
